| San Guo Yan Yi is a pioneering work of the historical novel.It depicts hundreds of heroes with distinctive personalities and vividly conveys the basic spirit of Chinese traditional culture.In recent years,there has been an increasing number of English translation studies of San Guo Yan Yi,but the English translation studies of female images are rarely mentioned.In view of the fact that different translators will have certain deviations in the process of shaping their images,the process of this deviation and the historical and cultural factors behind it are worthy of in-depth exploration.Based on this,after carefully reading the original text of San Guo Yan Yi and the translations by C.H.Brewitt-Taylor and Moss Roberts,the author finds that the images of Diao Chan in the two English translations are different in some respects.In order to further explore the differences,this thesis,based on the theoretical framework of imagology,attempts to explore how the image of Diao Chan is constructed in two versions by intrinsic textual analysis and reasons for such construction by extrinsic textual analysis.It can be found that Diao Chan in Brewitt-Taylor’s translation is mature,intelligent,and very humble to her foster father.However,in Roberts’ translation,Diao Chan is a charming girl who has the courage to pursue independence.And it can also be found that these differences are all related to the two translators’ social collective imagination,the source of information,and their personal emotion,imagination and attitudes towards exotic countries.Therefore,it can be said that the comparative analysis of this thesis has enriched the studies of Diao Chan’s reconstructed image to a certain extent,and provided a new perspective for the study on English translation of San Guo Yan Yi.Meanwhile,it is hoped that more researchers will pay attention to the female images in Chinese classics in the future. |
