This is a translation project report.The source text is selected from Becoming Hebrew: The Creation of a Jewish National Culture in Ottoman Palestine.The author is Arieh Bruce Saposnik,who is a Professor at the Ben-Gurion University.The fifth chapter,“New Immigrants,Rival Vanguards”,mainly details the conflict between Russian Jews and local Jews after they immigrated to Palestine,the struggle for the rise of the Hebrew in Palestine,and the significance of the Labor-Zionism they represented.The fifth chapter conveys a lot of information about Jewish culture and history.The expression of the chapter is logical,plain and objective.According to Reiss’ s text typology theory,it belongs to informative text.In the translation of informative text,the most important is to convey information accurately and objectively,so the translator chooses the functional equivalence of Eugene Nida as the theoretical guide.As an informative text to convey Jewish culture and history,there are a large number of culture-loaded words and proper nouns related to Jewish culture in ST,the translator mainly adopts the methods of paraphrasing,transliteration and adding footnotes.There are a lot of long and difficult sentences in the source text.The translator mainly adopts the methods of reorganization and omission to achieve functional equivalence.The significance of translating the translation project is to evoke the rethinking of scholars on the influence of the Vernacular Movement on Chinese people and encourage people to place more emphases on modern Chinese.
