The Translation Movement was an indispensable part of the creation of modern Western civilization. The translators not only brought the knowledge of ancient Greek and Arab civilizations to the Western intellectual community at that time, but more importantly shaped the intellectual outlook of the whole of Europe.Among them, the role of the translator Adelard of Bath is very important. He was born in Bath,England, and learned the knowledge of Liberal Arts in Tours and Laon when he was young.Later, his academic interest turned to study mathematics and astronomy. In 1109,he embarked on the road of studying alone and set out for far-away Arabia. After that,he brought back the knowledge and wisdom he learned from Arabs to his homeland, which opened the way for Westerners to understand Arab civilization. On the basis of fully reading the literature and guided by historical materialism and dialectical materialism, this paper echoes the personal experience of Adelard of Bath and the background of the times, and focuses on the analysis of Adelard’s historical contribution. This article is divided into three parts. The first part firstly analyzes the educational and cultural background of Western Europe in the early Middle Ages.Under the shroud of theology in the early Middle Ages, although natural philosophy has developed, there are few achievements.Secondly,it introduces the general situation of scientific development in the Arab world during the same period, and it introduces the basic overview of the Graeco-Arabic Translation Movement.Unlike the "dark times" in Western Europe, the Arab world has shown strong academic vitality. The second part discusses Adelard’s early experience and translation works. His most outstanding achievement lies in the translation of Euclid’s "Elements",Al-Khwarizmi’s "Astronomical Table" and some astrological works. These works have caused great shock in Europe and shaken the monopoly of theology in education. The third part mainly summarizes Adelard’s historical contribution.First, the introduction of Arabic and ancient Greek writings into Western Europe has caused revolutionary changes in the fields of mathematics and architecture.Secondly, the rationality expressed in his works and the unremitting pursuit of science are his outstanding characteristics as a new type of intellectual in the 12 th century. The concluding part summarizes Adelard’s career, and explores Adelard’s important role as a pioneer in spreading heterogeneous civilizations and his contribution to the origin of modern Western science.
