| William Wilberforce(1759-1833),an English member of Parliament,thanks to a special family trip in 1784,he was converted to evangelical religion.The change of faith as well as the influence of friends around him,changed his life goals and political ideals.Therefore,let him devote himself to moral reformation and abolition of the slave trade.Over the next four decades,he fought for the abolition of the slave trade and anti-slavery in Britain,which he promoted the formulation and execution of the Abolition of the British Slave Trade 1807 and the Slavery Abolition Act 1833.In this paper,by means of combing and analyzing the original data as well as related auxiliary data,trying to put Wilberforce under the background from the late eighteenth century to the early nineteenth century,to balance the several factors,like politics,economics,law,religious thoughts and so on.By exploring the political practice of his participation in the British abolitionist movement,to analysis his abolitionist thoughts.Another clue of this paper is about the interwoven characteristic of politics and religion on himself.On this basis,to explore his position and specific role in the British abolitionist movement.Through the establishment of Wilberforce’s life goal and the analysis of his political of abolishing slavery,it’s easy to find that Wilberforce is a figure who truly implements religious tenet into real life.As one of evangelicals,he also bears the traits of evangelicals in the late eighteenth century,believe the individual value of religious ideals,has a strong sense of social responsibility,of course,long to participate in public life.Wilberforce and his partners regarded the slave trade as a part of the moral reformation.With the advantages of his religious faith,he used religious rhetoric in politics,exerted unique moral authority,added to the power of the British abolitionist network to promulgation of abolitionist legislation politically.In the external world,he is a dedicated politician,in the inward,he is a devout evangelical.Owe to this duality made by himself,as a political spokesman of the abolitionist,he played an irreplaceable and positive role in the abolitionist movement in Britain. |
