The translation material of this paper is from the novel The Overstory written by American novelist Richard Powers. This author selected the part of PATRICIA WESTERFORD from the first part ROOTS of the novel. In order to enrich the culture industry, introducing excellent foreign works plays a significant role in nourishing cultures.Although this novel The Overstory won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2019,there is no Chinese version of this book. The original text of the translation material takes Patricia Westford’s life as the main line, describing her childhood, undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, postdoc and working experiences, which are closely related to trees and ecological environment. In the translation, based on Jin Di’s equivalent effect theory, the author tries to help target readers obtain the same feeling as original text readers on the basis of being faithful to the original text.Mainly based on two concepts of receiver and effect of Jin Di’s equivalent effect theory, this paper analyses the application of various translation strategies and techniques in lexical and syntactic aspects by citing translation cases,in order to get closer to the influence of the source text on the readers. In terms of words, the author, starting from the concept of receiver, adopts translation strategies and skills, such as domestication, substitution, correspondence and conversion,to make the words flexible, accurate and understandable,so as to achieve lexical equivalence. In terms of sentences, the author, starting from the concept of effect, applies translation strategies and techniques such as free translation, reversing, diversion, synchronizing, amplification and omission,to make sentences smooth and meaningful,so as to achieve syntactic equivalence.By selecting words and using sentences appropriately, the author avoids the appearance of Europeanized sentences, and the translation becomes more fluent and authentic and easier for readers to read and accept, thus realizing the purpose of translation and better achieving the principle of equivalent effect in terms of content. With the implementation of “Bringing In” strategy, that foreign cultures enter Chinese market can promote readers to learn and spread excellent foreign cultures, and enhance mutual exchanges between different cultures.
