This thesis is to interpret Oxherding Tale written by Charles Johnson by adopting hybridity theory of Homi K.Bhabha.It aims to highlight the fluidity of identity and the importance of building an inclusive world. There are lots of studies on Charles Johnson and Oxherding Tale, most of which revolve around the theme of race and freedom, whereas there are few postcolonial studies on Oxherding Tale.Given this status, the thesis adopts Homi K.Bhabha’s postcolonial theory,in the hope of offering a new approach to Oxherding Tale and a new sight to identity crisis of African Americans and intensifying readers’ understanding of identity.Taking Andrew’s identity construction as its focus, the thesis develops from four respects: Andrew’s identity crisis and its cause, his quest for identity and his relocation in Third Space.Based on the preceding analysis, the thesis ends up with the conclusions that the colonized like Andrew are able to reconstruct their identities but they have to deconstruct the binary logic and liberate their perception first and that the only effective solution to racial problem is that both the white and the black keep open to differences and build an inclusive world together instead of clinging to white supremacy or black supremacy.
