| The source text of this translation project is selected from Chapter 1 to 9 of Joyce Carol Oates’ s novel Two or Three Things I Forgot to Tell You.The novel mainly tells the story of Merissa Carmichael,a high school student with a happy family and excellent grades, who gradually falls into the abyss of self-harm after a double whammy of her parents’ divorce and the death of her good friend. It reveals the confusion and anxiety caused by emotional loss, which is really a warning to parents and society who should pay attention to adolescent mental health and is of current significance to help young readers develop a good attitude toward life.Building upon the Skopos Theory of Hans Vermeer, this thesis mainly reports the E-C translation of the novel at the lexical, syntactic and textual level. At the lexical level, the translator adopts literal translation,four-character set phrases and conversion;at the syntactic level, the translator employs free translation, reconstructing sentence pattern and sequential translation;at the textual level, the translator uses amplification and omission. The translation project takes young people as target readers and chooses the target language that is easy to be accepted by young readers for a purpose of a good reading experience and a deep understanding of the novel. The report hopes that it will deepen Chinese readers’ understanding of Joyce Carol Oates, and help Chinese scholars to study her works to some extent. |
