Study Of The Application Of Labov Narrative Analysis Model In English Narrative Reading Teaching In Senior High School

Reading is an important part of senior high school English teaching as well as a main way to learn English.Narrative reading comprehension is one of the most important types of the English college entrance examination.The model of 5W1 H was used to analyze the narrative texts in the past by teachers and students.However,this model only integrates the surface information about the text and fails to guide students to understand the narrative text thoroughly.Labov Narrative Analysis Model generalizes the whole process of narrative,including abstract,orientation,complicating action,evaluation,resolution and coda.Hereto,we use the Labov Narrative Analysis Model,created by American sociolinguistics William Labov,to help analyze the narrative text.In this study,the author selected 80 students from two parallel classes of a senior high school in Gaizhou city as the research participants.The teaching experiment lasted 17 weeks.In the control class,the traditional teaching method is adopted and the experimental class uses the Labov Narrative Analysis Model for teaching.It takes the questionnaires,reading tests and interviews as research tools and uses SPSS25.00 to compare and analyze the test results.The research results show that students’ reading interest,reading strategies and reading ability have got improved.The scores of experimental class are higher than those of the control class.This paper shows us a new idea for analyzing narrative discourse based on the Labov Narrative Analysis Model,which provides an effective method of English reading teaching and students’ reading comprehension in narrative discourse.There are some shortcomings in this study due to the influence of some subjective and objective factors,which need further study and reflection by researchers.
