In order to understand the activities students do in junior high school English class and provide suggestion for the design of classroom activities,this paper took the exemplary classes in the 13 th National Junior High School English Teaching Demonstration as example.It adopted classroom observation as the main research method to analyze the students’ activities in junior high school English class.By observing the videos of 8 exemplary lessons,the relevant data and information were collected.This paper took students as the observation dimension to study classroom activities in junior high school English class.There are three research questions:(1)Is there a balance among the cognitive,affective and physical activities in these exemplary lessons? What are the proportion of each type of activities?(2)What are the sub-types in these cognitive,affective and physical activities?(3)How about the participation of students in these activities?The results show that: first of all,the three types of activities are unbalanced,among which cognitive activities account for the largest proportion.Secondly,in cognitive activities,the sub-types mainly involve learning and understanding,application and practice and transformation and creation;in affective activities,the sub-types mainly involve activities to arouse students’ interest and motives,activities to inspire students’ confidence and will,activities to cultivate students’ cooperation spirit,motherland consciousness,international vision and values;in physical activities,the sub-types mainly involve acting and interacting.Finally,students’ participation in application and practice activities is the highest.In view of the above research conclusions,this paper suggests that junior high school English teachers should guide students to “learn by doing” and actively participate in various activities in the teaching process.At the same time,teachers should pay attention to cultivating students’ creative problem-solving ability,combine the theme of the text to design the corresponding affective activities and design rich physical activities.In addition,teachers should reasonably allocate the time of each part to ensure that students have enough time for all kinds of activities.
