| Philip Dick is the most famous science fiction writers.He uses a variety of creative styles to show readers a unique style of science fiction.Under the cloak of science imagination,his literary works contain strong questioning spirit and profound philosophy.Many of Dick’s representative works reflect his understanding of the philosophical proposition of death.This article chooses Dick’s novels Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?,Valis : The Holy Secret,Ubeke and the short stories The Word of the Dead,The Second Generation as the research object to explore Dick’s unique death writing in depth.This paper is divided into three chapters to discuss Dick’s thinking on the philosophical proposition of death.The first chapter starts with the life and death antagonism between human and machine in Dick’s works,and then discusses deeply what is human,as well as scientific and technological rationality and ecological ethics.The second chapter focuses on the analysis of the spectre phenomenon represented by the bardo depicted by Dick under the influence of Buddhist thoughts and Taoist thoughts,and discusses the value of Dick’s thinking of the undead world,which breaks the established view of "life is short and death is eternal" and realizes "eternal life ",but the illusion of the undead world and the uncertainty of human identity make the living experience more complicated and thought-provoking;The third chapter starts with Dick’s writing about the nihilistic word and the self-saving of human beings,and analyzes Dick’s personal rescue journey based on his own understanding and perception of Gnosticism,with the help of religious revelation,regarding the death of innocent people as the break-through to try to find the answer to his inner doubts.In a word,Dick combines science fiction with religion,modern science and technology criticism and so on,which embodies Dick’s ultimate concern for human destiny and his long-cherished wish to save the empty soul of modern people. |
