Writing can show students’ comprehensive ability and it is an important part in English teaching.As for the learning of English writing,students tended to focus on the use of vocabulary and grammar,and they neglected the use of cohesive devices.Therefore,how to improve the use of cohesive devices and writing achievements in writing teaching becomes an urgent problem.As an important feature of discourse analysis,cohesion occupies an important position in the construction of coherent discourse.The SPDCAM model focuses on cohesion theory and the use of cohesive devices.It contains five steps,namely,structure,practice,drafting,cooperation,assessment and modification.Therefore,based on cohesion theory,input hypothesis and output hypothesis,this study attempts to explore whether the application of the SPDCAM model can improve the use of cohesive devices and achievements in junior high school students’ English writing.The author randomly selected 88 students in Grade 9 from Yucai Middle School in Baiyin as participants in this study.One was chosen randomly as the experimental class and another was the control class.The experiment lasted 16 weeks.The instruments were two composition tests.The SPDCAM model was applied in the experimental class,while the process approach writing teaching method was used in the control class.With the help of SPSS20.0,the author analyzed descriptive statistics,independent sample T-test and paired sample T-test to test students’ use of grammatical cohesive devices,lexical cohesive devices and students’ writing achievements.The results show that the SPDCAM model can improve students’ writing achievements,and can also improve students’ use of grammatical cohesive devices and lexical cohesive devices.The study has some implications to English writing teaching in junior high school.Teachers should teach discourse knowledge in the English writing teaching to improve the correct use of cohesive devices.Besides,teachers can apply SPDCAM model to English writing teaching in junior high school to enhance writing achievements.
