With the emergence of intelligent materials and technologies,contemporary technological and productivity changes are changing people’s way of thinking and designing objects.Because technology is one of the major drivers of change in our lives and societies,designers today—in the computational era—must deal with the transition from traditional materials to smart materials to improve the quality of the next generation of products and achieve user experience.This is the main purpose of Materials that Move:Smart Materials,Intelligence Design written by Murat Bengisu and Marinella Ferrara.For those who need to understand the potential of these new materials for better design from the perspective of the relationship between people and technology,this book is of great value.This practice report is based on the translation practice of chapter 5,6 and 7 of Materials that Move: Intelligent Materials and Intelligent Design.The author firstly introduced the characteristics of the text of intelligent materials,then described the guiding principles of this translation practice,Newmark’s communicative translation principles and a variety of translation strategies.In the part of case analysis,the author made a concrete analysis of the characteristics of the article and the translation strategies used,combining the cases introduced by the Kinetic Material project.For the passive sentences,complex sentences and simple sentences,the author adopted different translation strategies,including splitting,amplification and conversion in order to make the translation more accurate and practical.
