A Report On E-C Translation Of Fisherman’s Blues: A West African Community At Sea (Chapters 2-3)

The translation report is written on the basis of the E-C translation of Chapter Two and Chapter Three of Fisherman’s Blues: A West African Community at Sea as the source text.The source text is classified as the non-fiction and mainly gives an intimate account of what the author Anna Badkhen had observed,heard and perceived in Joal-Fadiouth,a West African fishing village.Featured with a combination of narrative and dialogues,the source text depicts the daily lives of local fishermen and the tremendous crisis they are confronted with-the local fishery resources are on the verge of depletion because of climate changes and overfishing caused by the increase in foreign fishing vessels.Based on the linguistic characteristics of the source text,this translation report summarizes the translation difficulties encountered in the translation process,which are presented respectively at lexical level,phrasal level and syntactic level on the whole and places an emphasis on the translation methods utilized to cope with translation difficulties by means of case analysis.Aimed to deal with translation difficulties at lexical level,the translator chooses translation methods of extension of word meaning and adding annotation,so that readers can have better comprehension of the source text.At phrasal level,turning phrases into clauses and semantic explication are adopted by the translator in order to make the translation smooth and ensure that the information contained in the phrases can be accurately conveyed to readers.In addition,via analyzing the translation difficulties at syntactic level,the translator applies translation methods of linear translation and reframing sentence structures for the purpose of presenting the translation featured with clear structure and language expression tailored to the target readers.In the translation report,the translator sums up the gains and deficiencies in E-C translation process,intended to provide valuable reference for translators who render the same text type.
