A Study Of C-E Interpretation Strategies Of Fuzzy Language From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

This thesis is concerned with a Relevance Theory approach to fuzzy language interpreting strategies in C-E interpretation.Previous studies discussed fuzzy language interpreting strategies in terms of Functional Equivalence approach,Skopos Theory approach and Adaptation Theory approach.However,further efforts are needed to approach fuzzy language interpreting strategies in its comprehensive inclusiveness of linguistic level,cultural level and rhetorical level.Relevance Theory sees translation as a process of seeking optimal relevance under ostension-inference and cognitive context,and therefore applicable in discussing fuzzy language interpreting strategies at the linguistic level,cultural level and rhetorical level.Therefore,this thesis adopts Relevance Theory to study C-E interpretation strategies of fuzzy language and is specifically devoted to the following three questions:(1)What interpreting strategies of fuzzy language at linguistic level can be adopted in C-E interpretation?(2)What interpreting strategies of fuzzy language at cultural level can be adopted in C-E interpretation?(3)What interpreting strategies of fuzzy language at rhetorical level can be adopted in C-E interpretation?This thesis identifies itself as a qualitative and case study,and the data are collected from the interpreting texts of the Press Conference of the Premier Li Keqiang from 2018 to 2020.It is concluded that :(1)The interpreting strategies adopted for fuzzy language at linguistic level include keeping fuzziness and turning fuzziness to accuracy.(2)The interpreting strategies adopted for fuzzy language at cultural level include explanation and omission.(3)The interpreting strategies adopted for fuzzy language at rhetorical level include literal translation and free translation.Whatever strategies are adopted,they all serve the optimal relevance in cognitive context based on a full cognition of ostension and inference between the source text and the target text.This thesis discusses fuzzy language interpreting strategies in C-E interpretation by employing Relevance Theory,expected to shed some light on studies on fuzzy language interpreting strategies on one hand,and to expand to some extent the application of Relevance Theory on the other hand.
