Questions Researching For Khitan’s General Wangyu

Wang Yu is a famous family of the Han in the Central Plains,who was active in Khitan and Central Plains in the early Liao Dynasty.However,due to the different sources of references i n the compilation process of the biography of Wang Yu in Liao history,there are different degrees of differences and contradictions in the historical records related to Wang Yu in different books.Through the comparative study of several documents,we can know that the completion of Liao Shi · Wang Yu Zhuan not only refers to the contents of the new Five Dynasties History,but also refers to t he traces of other five dynasties and Song Dynasty documents,such as the Old Five Dynasties History and the old Tang Shu.At the same time,it also combines the contents of Liao Xiu Shi Lu and Liao Shi compiled by Jin people.Wang Yu’s affiliation to the Liao Dynasty may have been earli er than the time recorded in the written records.It should be divid ed into two different periods before and after the fall of Liao Dyna sty in 921.In the previous period,Wang Yu,although seemingly s erving the post Tang regime,probably had some contacts with the Khitan regime and participated in the internal affairs of the Khitan regime.At the same time,Wang Yu,who was appointed to Xinzho u during this period,left almost no record in the historical records,which may also be related to the fact that Wang Yu was granted the Jie Du Shi in Xinzhou and moved to Shan Bei Du Tuan Lian Shi.Wang Yu’s surrender to the Liao Dynasty in 921 was not only the result of Wang Chuzhi’s instructions,but also the product ofWang Yu’s personal ambition.After Wang Yu’s surrender to Khitan,he was also like other early surrender to the Liao and Han Dynas ties,and was valued by the Liao Taizu abaoji and loved by the Khitan royal family.However,with the deepening of feudalization in Khitan and the gradual maturity of the political system,the Wang Yu`s family,who came from military service,inevitably declined.
