There are more than a thousand villages in Lingchuan County.Behind the names of these villages are the environmental choices and geographical identification of the villagers.Because Lingchuan County is located in the hinterland of Taihang Mountain, the east is rocky mountainous area, the northwest is the earth-rock hilly area, and the southwest is the Pingchuan area. The topography is extremely complex. Therefore, through combing and analyzing the names of these villages,it can be found that most of the place names in Lingchuan County are derived from natural landscapes, and there are relatively few villages named after human landscapes. This complex natural environment has become the most intuitive for villagers in this area in historical times. The cognition and the factors that must be considered in village site selection.Through the statistics of the county chronicles of the Qing Dynasty and the population data of the villages in the Republic of China,it can be found that from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, the population size of the rural settlements in Lingchuan County has undergone major changes.it can be found that from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, the population size of rural settlements in Lingchuan County has increased.During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, due to social stability, the population of the villages in Lingchuan County reached its peak, with a total population of more than 250,000,but the population was mainly concentrated in the west, and the number of villages in the eastern mountainous areas was small and small. In the early years of Guangxu,Lingchuan County was hit hard by the influence of the "Ding Wuqi Wilderness".The population was nearly half less than in Qianlong’s reign. In particular, villages in the western region suffered serious losses. The population of many villages was more than 70% less than in Qianlong’s reign. However, villages in the eastern mountainous areas were relatively less affected.During the Republic of China, due to the influence of immigrants from Henan and other places,a large number of small settlements emerged in the eastern mountainous area, and some original settlements were developed. In contrast, although the villages in the western region still have an advantage in population, their development was slow, and some were even less than the population during the Guangxu period.Villages in Lingchuan County can be divided into agricultural settlements in the western Pingchuan District, commercial town settlements and eastern mountain settlements according to their geographical landscape.Pingchuan District in the west is a typical agricultural area in Lingchuan County. The villages here are large in scale, and the cultivated land is terraced around the village. The dwellings in the village are closely connected, and there are many temples in the village with a larger scale.Commercial towns are huge, with vertical and horizontal streets, numerous commercial shops and numerous temples. The villages in the mountainous areas in the east are small in scale.Early villages were attached to the traffic line. The dwellings in the deep mountains were scattered, the building materials were often taken locally, and the number of temples was small and the scale was small. The landscapes of different villages in the three regions of Pingchuan District, commercial towns in the west of Lingchuan County, and mountainous areas in the east show different development patterns in the three regions. In the traditional period, the natural environment and traffic have become important factors affecting the villages in the hinterland of Taihang Mountain represented by Lingchuan County. The natural environment affects the location, naming, scale, and form of the village,as well as the villagers’ perception of the surrounding environment of the village.Traffic factors have promoted the development of commercial towns and the development of eastern mountainous areas and the proliferation of small-scale villages.
