This translation report is based on the English-Chinese translation of chapters one and two of the biographical text Life of Beethoven. The text describes the life story of Beethoven from his childhood to his death, including his works and love experience.By translating this biographical text, the author aims to convey Beethoven’s creative spirit and excellent qualities to the readers of the target language and let more readers of the target language have a better understanding of Beethoven. This translation report focuses on the translation of implicit information in biographical texts by analyzing both lexical and syntactic implicit meaning. In the course of the translation practice, the translator found that the obscurity of the meaning of abstract nouns, the implication of the context and the information gap of the utterance components are the main elements constituting the implicit information in this text.In order to achieve the same level of comprehension for the reader of the target language as for the reader of the source language, the translator should take into account the need to make explicit some of the meanings that contain implicit information. This translation report uses relevance theory and functional equivalence as theoretical guide to solve the problem of translating implicit information in the texts by applying the method of explicitation.Through writing this translation report, the author has gained a more comprehensive understanding of the concept of implicit information and the translation methods. At the same time, the author has also put forward her own ideas and appropriate translation methods, hoping to provide some reference for the future translators.
