Chinese cultural activities are one of the important ways for the Confucius Institute to go global and show the charm of Chinese culture.Since the establishment of the Confucius Institute of Betong Municipality,Thailand in 2006,it has been promoting teaching Chinese and spreading Chinese culture as its mission.It has carried out multiple types and levels of Chinese language teaching,and has organized a variety of cultural activities,enjoying a certain reputation in the local area.In 2019,I was dispatched by Hanban to the Confucius Institute of Betong Municipality as a nine-month volunteer Chinese teacher.Based on Harold Lasswell’s“5W” communication theory,this paper takes the Chinese cultural activities held by Confucius Institute of Betong Municipality as the object of investigation,conducts a comprehensive analysis of the current situation of cultural activities promotion in Betong from five aspects through questionnaire survey and interview to students,local Chinese teachers,Chinese teacher volunteers and sponsored Chinese teachers.Afterwards feasible suggestions for its were put forward according to the existing problems.This paper is divided into six parts.The first part is the introduction,which introduces the background,significance,theoretical basis and research methods of this paper,and summarizes the previous study.The second part resumes the cultural activities development of the Confucius Institute of Betong Municipality in the past five years,including the time,place,form and content of cultural activities.The third part,based on the “5W” theory,analyzes the current situation of the promotion of Chinese cultural activities of Confucius Institute of Betong Municipality from five aspects: audience,communicator,content,media and effect.The fourth part is a case study,which introduces the specific implementation steps of a series of activities for the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2019 held by the Confucius Institute of Betong Municipality.The case study shows that the Confucius Institute of Betong Municipality has the awareness of “one theme,multiple activities”.In the fifth part,the author makes some feasible suggestions for the Confucius Institute of Betong Municipality in carrying out Chinese cultural activities,hoping to promote the development of the Chinese cultural activities in the local area.The sixth part is the conclusion,including the author’s understanding of the inadequacy in this study.
