The advancement of globalization provides an opportunity for the vigorous development of international education.More and more Chinese students choose to go abroad to embrace international education.Meanwhile, more and more foreign universities are strengthening cooperation with domestic schools to promote communication.Consecutive interpreting plays an important role in cultural exchanges.A qualified interpreter should accomplish the interpreting tasks successfully. In order to attract more Chinese students to further their study in New Zealand,Directors of the International Education Department of the Palmerstone Girls’ and Boys’ High School of New Zealand came to Fuzhou City,Fujian Province to give a lecture. The author was responsible for this interpreting task.Based on Professor Lai Yihua’s(2012)dynamic interpretation model, this paper analyzes the merits of this interpreting practice from three aspects: relevance, deverbalization, and adaptation skills, and lays more emphasis on the problems like information loss, misinterpreting and deficiency of target language expressions due to poor listening comprehension, inadequate background information and short-term memory,as well as improper effort distribution. As pre-interpreting preparation is indispensable in interpreting process, the author makes preparations by searching information of New Zealand, its education system and North Palmerstone’s geographical environment, and collecting relevant terminologies. The author applies some interpreting skills such as relevance skills, interpretive skills and adaptation skills to infer the speaker’s intention and covey the real meaning to achieve the required effect. This paper elaborates on the task background, interpreting case analysis, factors affecting the quality of interpretation, and strategies for improving interpreting skills.Through specific case analysis, the author finds that listening comprehension is the foundation of interpreting practice, information processing and memory are particularly important, and re-expression should be fluent and appropriate to the specific context. Moreover, the author also finds that the following tactics can help improve interpreting:enhancing listening comprehension skills and short-term memory, taking logical notes, and upgrading bilingual competence and public speaking ability. The author hopes this report reflecting on the practice will lay a solid foundation for refining interpreting skills and also provide a reference for other interpreting learners in future practice.
