The Study Of Images In Allan Poe’s Poems

Edger Allan Poe(1809-1849)is a famous American writer,critic and poet for his eccentricity in the 19 th century.He wrote a lot of novels in his life.He was praised as the father of detective stories and the successor of Gothic novels.His works influenced the aesthetics of the three French poets,Baudelaire,Mallard and Valerie.However,in the United States,his works were not compatible with the prevailing romantic style at that time,so he was isolated from the first-class American literature for a long time until his death.Poetry is the concise product of poet’s emotion and ideal,and image is the basic aesthetic unit of poetry theme,that is,the unity of poet’s subjective emotion and objective object.Allan Poe is good at using poetic images to convey symbolism,expressing his instant feelings and reposing the author’s feelings.Allan Poe advocates the concept of “pure poetry” and the theory of unified effect,and pursues the beauty of distance and form in poetry.Therefore,Poe’s choice of poetic images also shows a strong sense of distance and pure beauty.Starting from Poe’s images,this paper analyzes the main characteristics of his early poetic images and later poetic images.Allan Poe’s poetry image gradually transforms from the early dreamy beauty,the sacred beauty to the death beauty,and his poetry also gradually turns from immature to mature.This paper is divided into three parts.The first part analyzes the source of image in Poe’s poetry by combining his time,his rough life experience,the influence of Western cultural tradition on Poe and his creative theory.The second part analyzes several image types in Poe’s poems.These images can be divided into entity image and non entity image.Entity image mainly includes natural image: personified star moon image;The beauty images in the early stage of poetry creation: Goddess and bride;the beauty images of death and rebirth in the late stage of poetry creation;Color image: black,white,red,yellow.There are mainly two kinds of non entity images: dream image and death image.The third part analyzes the aesthetic style of Allan Poe’s poetry,mainly including the beauty of dream,the beauty of holiness and the beauty of death.Poe’s poetry contains a strong aesthetic style and profound literary connotation.Starting from the aesthetic category,the perspective of emoticon function and symbolic freehand brushwork function,this paper studies the image in Allan Poe’s poetry and its aesthetic connotation by using the method of close reading.
