| This research,based on American psychologist Witkin’s field-independent/field-dependent cognitive style,is aiming to explore the correlation between field-independent/field-dependent cognitive style and English performance by taking Yichang Foreign Language Junior Middle School as subjects.To achieve the study purpose,two research questions are put forward:(1)What are the characteristics of the distribution of junior high school students’ cognitive styles?(2)Is there a correlation between field-independent/field-dependent cognitive styles and junior high school students’ English performance(listening,reading,writing and total scores)and how?(3)What are the differences between male and female students with different cognitive styles in English performance?In this research,212 junior high school students from Yichang Foreign Language Junior Middle School were required to finish the Style Figure Test compiled by the School of Psychology of Beijing Normal University to examine their field-independent/field-dependent cognitive style.2020-2021 interim final English examination held in Yichang Foreign Language Middle School is used to collect subjects’ scores which will be analyzed by employing.SPSS24(including descriptive statistical analysis,Pearson correlation coefficient analysis).Finally,several students from the subjects in the research will be interviewed to talk about their language learning experiences.The results are as follows:(1)Junior high school students are more field dependent than field independent.(2)The English listening performance of the field dependent is slightly better than that of the field independent.Field-independent cognitive style has a significant positive correlation with junior high school students’ reading and writing performance.Field-independent students have more advantages in English reading and writing.(3)Male and female students with different cognitive styles have differences in English performance.Boys with field-independent have better English performance,girls with filed-independent have better reading and writing performance,and field-dependents have better listening performance.The study may provide some inspiration for foreign language teachers and learners.Teachers can arrange all kinds of teaching activities based on students’ individual differences after understanding their unique cognitive style;students,on the other hand,can maximize their strengths and avoid weaknesses based on their own cognitive styles,and find their own learning strategies and methods,achieving a big difference in English learning. |
