This thesis is a reflective report on the practice of simulated English-Chinese consecutive interpreting, with an International Monetary Fund online seminar named The Role of Social Spending in Promoting Inclusive Growth in the Middle East,North Africa and Central Asia. After the interpreting activity, the author finds there are some deficiencies in her delivery, such as interpreting errors and omissions.By repeatedly comparing the source language to the target language and notes, the author believes the main factor undermines her delivery is the inefficient notes she takes down during interpreting, including the rigid notes, the illogical notes and the notes with ambiguous symbols and abbreviations. In this thesis, the problems mentioned above are deeply reflected and several approaches to improve them are proposed in light of the Interpretive Theory. In terms of the first kind of problems, deverbalisation is the key, which can be elaborated as abandoning the original language structure, making marks for word order changing and filtering repetitive information. In terms of the second one, endowing the layout of notes with a clear, logical structure would be helpful, which means the notes should be structured in hierarchical ways and chunked in sense units. In terms of the third one,it would be essential to apply proprietary symbols and abbreviations to the representation of individual terms in the glossary and improve the interpreter’s individualized system of fixed symbols and abbreviations. The author hopes this thesis can provide a reference for other interpreting learners who are practicing interpreting international conferences, and also can act as research materials for scholars who are studying note-taking in interpreting activities.
