A Study On Glyphs Of Xu Fu Gu Bian

XuFuGuBian is a discriminated typeface book compiled by Cao Ben in Yuan Dynasty,with its purpose to restore the orthodox status of small seal script in Shuo Wen by distinguishing various typefaces circulating in the society at that time.In addition to the normal characters used in the society at that time,the book has also included a large number of folk characters and variant characters,thus containing rich font materials.However,the book has been long ignored in the academic world in terms of its research value in the history of philology,lack of in-depth and specialized research.Therefore,this thesis is conducted to take XuFuGuBian as the research object to compare and summarize the physical differences of various characters in the book,and to analyze the causes of the formation of various types of characters,thus better understanding the situation of the use of characters in the Yuan dynasty.Furthermore,the thesis intends to fill in the research gap of the study of the Yuan dynasty philology,and tries to give a fair evaluation to this book.This article mainly adopts the research methods of combining quantitative research with qualitative research,synchronic comparison with diachronic investigation,and comparing characters with literature characters.First of all,the paper summarizes the folk characters and variant characters collected in XuFuGuBian,and compares them with the normal characters and common characters respectively to generalize their different types of forms,and to explore the reasons for the emergence of folk characters and variant characters and their application in later generations.Secondly,by contrasting the small seal script characters in XuFuGuBian and Shuo Wen,this paper sums up the type differences and the feature of small seal script in XuFuGuBian to analyze the reasons for the changes of the small seal scrip,with the expectation to provide some information for the research of the small seal script.Finally,this essay attempts to explore the value and deficiency of XuFuGuBian,hoping to promote the academic circle to understand XuFuGuBian furtherly through the research of this paper.Through the comparison between different characters,the thesis has a comprehensive understanding of the differences of various characters in XuFuGuBian,and has a certain understanding of the characters used at that time in Yuan dynasty.The collation and conclusion of folk characters,variant characters and small seal script in the thesis can provide some references for the related research of philology in the future.
