The New Curriculum Standards for Junior Middle school English clearly states that the overall goal of English course in the basic education stage is to develop the students’ abilities of language use.In the junior high school stage,students can exchange information with their peers on different topics and state their own ideas.It can be seen that students’ ability of speaking English plays a very important role in communicative activities.With the implementation of the questionnaire,interview as well as the classroom observation,this paper investigates and studies the current situation of oral English teaching in junior middle schools in rural areas of Yichang,Hubei.The goal is to understand three questions: 1.What is the current situation of oral English learning among junior middle schools students in rural areas of Yichang,Hubei? 2.What is the current situation of oral English teaching of junior middle school teachers in rural Yichang,Hubei? 3.What are the main problems of oral English teaching in junior middle schools in rural areas of Yichang,Hubei?The survey results show that junior middle school students in rural areas of Yichang,Hubei Province do not pay enough attention to oral English learning,students are not confident in expressing themselves in English;it is difficult for the students to freely communicate in English;Teachers in rural areas of Yichang,Hubei Province focus on cultivating students’ written ability.Oral English activities are so monotonous and boring that students’ participation is not satisfying.Some teachers’ oral English level remains to be improved.In some areas,teachers have not changed their teaching methods,and some older teachers have not adjusted themselves well.Schools in rural areas of Yichang,Hubei Province,do not pay enough attention to English listening and speaking.There are few large-scale activities related to oral English,and there is a lack of evaluation and feedback mechanism for students’ oral English.Meanwhile,in the process of the implementation of the high school entrance examination reform requirements,there is little supervision of the teachers in some regions,resulting in poor implementation.The author puts forward the following suggestions for oral English teaching in rural areas of Yichang,Hubei:First,schools should pay more attention to oral English learning,organize more activities related to oral English,and improve the evaluation and feedback mechanism,which should not only strengthen the evaluation of students,but also strengthen the inspection of teachers’ teaching process.Second,teachers need to pay more attention to listening and oral English learning,enrich the forms of oral English activities in class,encourage students to use English boldly,and let students actively participate in class.Third,students should develop an interest in oral English learning,actively use English to communicate outside the classroom.Through this study,it provides some guidance for the present stage of oral English teaching in rural areas of Yichang,and provides some reference for improving the current situation of oral English teaching in rural areas,enhancing students’ oral English abilities,and adapting to the changes of oral English teaching along with the reform trend of middle school entrance examination.
