| Lying is common in everyday life, and it is important for individuals and society to identify lies accurately and in a timely manner.Numerous studies have consistently found that people are only marginally better at spotting lies than random. However, most of the previous studies were carried out at the level of consciousness, and conscious thinking has three limitations in lie detection: limited processing ability, poor ability to weigh the objective importance of information, and easy to be influenced by top-down processing.Unconscious thinking theory(UTT)holds that unconscious thinking can compensate for these limitations of conscious thinking. Therefore, this study is based on UTT theory to explore the advantages of unconscious thinking in lie detection.Experiment 1 recruit 91 students, using the single factor experiment design between subjects(thinking type: the conscious mind, the unconscious mind, immediate decision conditions),and asked participants under the condition of different thinking classic lies identification test task, which asked participants to watch random playback of video and judge of objects in the video is lying or telling the truth. The results showed that:(1)There were no significant differences in the accuracy, discrimination ability and response bias between conscious thinking, unconscious thinking and immediate decision making.(2)The correct recognition rate of the truth-telling video was significantly higher than that of the lying video.(3)No matter what kind of thinking type, the subjects had a significant truth bias.In order to avoid the influence of too much guesswork on the experimental results in the process of lie recognition. In Experiment 2,the judgment method of lie detection was changed from dichotomy to 1-10 scale. In Experiment 2,100 students were recruited, also using the single-factor intersubject experiment design(thinking type: conscious thinking, unconscious thinking, immediate decision condition)to investigate whether unconscious thinking has advantages in lie recognition. The results showed that :(1)There were no significant differences in the accuracy and discrimination ability of the participants under conscious thinking, unconscious thinking and immediate decision-making;However,the accuracy of the unconscious thinking group was significantly higher than that of the conscious thinking group.(2)The recognition accuracy of the truth-telling video was significantly higher than that of the lying video.(3)The response bias of the unconscious thinking group was significantly lower than that of the conscious thinking group, and there was no significant difference between the immediate decision group, the unconscious thinking group and the conscious thinking group.(4)There was no significant response bias in the unconscious thinking group, but there was significant truth bias in the conscious thinking group and the immediate decision group.Based on the above experimental results, the conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)Compared with conscious thinking, unconscious thinking does not have an advantage in the overall accuracy of lie detection, but has an advantage in the accuracy of lie video recognition.(2)Compared with conscious thinking, unconscious thinking has an advantage in response bias of lie recognition, and there is no obvious truth bias. |
