This report is based on the English-Chinese translation practice of The Bookshop of the World: Making and Trading Books in the Dutch Golden Age(Excerpts). It is written by Andrew Pettegree,a professor of modern history, and Arthur der Weduwen,a researcher at the University of St.Andrews.This book tells for the first time the remarkable story of how the Dutch reshaped the seventeenth-century book world, and how the Dutch produced many more books than any other countries in Europe. The original text involves lots of proper nouns of history,cultural-loaded words and a large amount of long and complex sentences, which requires the translator to read and research a lot of materials in the process of translation. This report, with five parts contained, focuses on how to solve typical translation difficulties from the perspective of adaptation theory. The translation can be classified into three aspects of adaptation: dynamics of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, contextual correlates of adaptability. When translating terms and cultural-loaded words, the translator used several methods, including conversion, combining free translation and transliteration, literal translation with annotation and transliteration with annotation. In syntactic and textual level, the translator adopted some translation strategies such as division, adjusting word order and shift.Through this practice, the translator finds that adaptation theory has value for guiding the translation of historical texts. The translator hopes that the translation can provide a valuable reference for relevant social and cultural studies and this report will provide some reference for the translation of historical texts in the future.
