In recent years,the scores and difficulty of the reading comprehension in the National College Entrance Examination have increased obviously.It emphasizes on semantic transformation based on understanding of the reading material and multi-skill cultivation of students.Reading is an important skill in senior high school English education which helps students know about knowledge and skills of home and abroad.These factors make the improvement of English reading ability a very urgent issue.This research mainly focuses on the importance of critical thinking on cultivation of creativity and improvement of reading ability for students.It combines the literature research method,questionnaire survey method and interview method,as well as methods of following up and observing English reading classroom.At first,the current situation of critical thinking ability in teaching was investigated by questionnaire survey for students’ grasp of critical thinking ability in English reading and an interview with teachers for learning about cultivation of critical thinking ability in teaching;Analysis of the results of questionaires and interviews to c o n d u c t t h e causes of students’ lack of critical thinking ability in senior high school English reading.And possible solutions are put forward correspondingly.Then a senior high school curriculum teaching case analysis will be carried out.Finally,a conclusion is drawn.The purpose of this research is to explore how to cultivate students’ critical thinking ability in English reading teaching in senior high school.The research result shows that the cultivation of critical thinking has certain positive significance for English reading teaching in the senior high school.Teachers can make the cultivation and development of students’ critical thinking ability come true in senior high school English reading teaching by asking students appropriate questions,changing previous fixed mode of thinking and teaching and deepening their reading comprehension ability by means of analyzing and judging reading text on their own and some other particular methods for developing students’ critical thinking ability.This may be regarded as a teaching case of how to cultivate students’ critical thinking in senior high school English reading teaching in the future teaching.
