In the early January of 2020,an unexpected pandemic outbroke in China and then swept the world rapidly.Under this global crisis, different countries had different responses, which raised reflection of the shared future for mankind from people. This thesis is a report on the E-C translation of selected news reports on COVID-19 in The Guardian, which mainly concerned with topics such as the reports on the latest updates of coronavirus in the UK,the guiding principles and policies of political parties and social organizations, some critical articles, etc. The report analyses the news reports from three levels: lexis, syntax and text, summing up the characteristics of news language, and further takes “Skopos Theory” as the guiding theory, discussing how to achieve the intended function of source text and also better convey news information.According to the skopos theory, translation is a purposeful and productive activity, which contains three principles: skopos principle, coherence principle and fidelity principle. In this translation practice report, the author follows the three principles of skopos theory and analyses translation cases from lexis, syntax and text levels. In the process of translating, the author combines literal translation with free translation, and flexibly takes different translation methods such as amplification, inversion and conversion, ensuring the faithfulness and accuracy,as well as the comprehensibility and smoothness of target text.Based on this E-C translation practice, the author aims to have a systematic understanding to the application of skopos theory and the three principles of it,and also expects to provide reference to the E-C translation study of other informative texts.
