Based on German Functional School’s Skopostheorie, the practice study report does a structured analysis on the E-C translation of excerpts from The Black Experience in America: From Civil Rights to the Present,a volume edited by Jeff Wallenfeldt who has been an editor of Britannica. The material in this translation practice covers the introduction part, chapter 5 and chapter 6.The selected original text is a historical and cultural text that can be categorized into informative text type with a plain, objective tone and logical and rigorous wording, which is an important academic material for African American Culture.Under the three principles of Skopostheorie-Skopos rule,Coherence rule and Fidelity rule-the report conducts a detailed study of pre-translation,translation,and post-translation,and carries out in-depth analysis on the application of the principles with specific examples. After analyzing and discussing translation cases at vocabulary, sentence, and discourse levels,it is literal translation supplemented by free translation that is adopted in this translation practice for the original text-historical and cultural text is a content-focused text. While dealing with some key and difficult cases including historical and cultural terms, black music terms, long and difficult sentences, passive sentences, text cohesion, style reproduction and etc.,specific translation strategies are proposed, such as the transliteration addition, deconstruction, additional translation, word order conversion, sentence pattern integration,as well as four-character and six-character forms. After analyzing the translation cases and subjective and objective evaluations, the report proves to a certain extent the applicability of the Skopostheorie to the translation practice of historical and cultural texts.
