| Complex object is a common syntactic category in English and Chinese. It refers to the object composed of syntactic structure, which is relative to simple object. There are a large number of complex objects in English and Chinese, which provides rich resources for the contrast research of complex objects between English and Chinese.Previous studies have focused on one aspect of a certain complex object, while few have focused on the object as a whole. These studies only discuss from the perspective of verbs, and analyze the relationship between verb correspondence and non-correspondence from a cognitive perspective, but lack the analysis of its production mechanism, and the depth and breadth of the study have limitations. This study applies construction grammar to make a contrastive analysis of complex objects in English and Chinese.Construction is a combination of form and meaning. Therefore, this study believes that the constructional features of English and Chinese should be discussed separately in terms of form and meaning. It is impossible to grasp the internal features of the specific construction by analyzing the complex objects in English and Chinese only from one aspect.Through a detailed analysis and contrast of the forms and meanings of complex objects in English and Chinese, the similarities and differences of their characteristics are revealed. This study summarizes the syntactic and semantic types of complex objects in English and Chinese respectively. It also uses the argument structure in Goldberg’s cognitive construction grammar to analyze and explain some formal and semantic features of complex objects in English and Chinese in order to have a general understanding of the contrastive study of complex objects in English and Chinese.Through detailed analysis, the following conclusions are drawn.Semantically,They all have similar result meanings.,which can be expressed as "NP1 causes NP2 to become X".Chinese complex object construction is a polysemous isomorphic construction, while English complex object construction is a resultant construction with polysemy.Formally, from the point of view of verbs, both include causative verbs and naming verbs.Chinese complex object constructions include praise and blame verbs, existence verbs and focus marker “Shi”,while English complex object constructions include cognitive, retention and resultant action verbs. In terms of the composition of C in Chinese complex objects, they are all predicate(phrase)and predicated noun, and NP,AP,PP and Non-finite verbs act as them.C in English and Chinese complex objects is not directly related to the subject in the sentence. In this study, the formal and semantic features of complex objects in English and Chinese are analyzed in depth from the perspective of construction grammar, which is not only an extension of previous studies, but also a foundation for future contrastive studies between English and Chinese. |
