| Recent years have witnessed an increasing consciousness of environmental protection, therefore, the global warming becomes one of the crucial issues to all human beings. The source text of this translation practice report is selected from David E.Reichle’s book,The Global Carbon Cycle and Climate Change.Under the background of global warming, this book illustrates the impacts of the carbon cycle on living organisms on earth from the aspects of physics, chemistry and biology, which is an essential resource for studying the global warming.Under the guidance of Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory,it is necessary for the translator to make appropriate shifts in terms of the parts of speech, grammatical units, sentence structures and so on in order to ensure the accuracy and fluency of the target language.Firstly,as for the non-equivalences of grammars and words in the E-C translation process, the translator applies the tense and aspect shifts strategy by adding the corresponding components to achieve the bilingual equivalence. For the long sentences in the source text, the translator utilizes the unit shifts to split them into shorter sentences or phrases to reduce the difficulties during the translation process. In addition, the class shifts strategy in this theory can be favorable to the translator to switch the parts of speech of the words with difficulty,so that the target text can be more in line with Chinese expression habits.Through this translation practice, the translator has realized that the translation of informative texts must be based on a profound understanding of the content of the source text, comprehending the relevant background knowledge, and adopting appropriate translation methods,so that accurate information of the source text can be well conveyed ultimately. |
