The global outbreak of COVID-19 has exerted a severe impact on the world economy, especially on tourism. So it’s a common aspiration for global tourism destinations and companies to strengthen cooperation and promote tourism recovery.Against this backdrop, the 2020 World Conference on Tourism Cooperation and Development was held under the theme of Rebuilding World Tourism for Prosperity. The author simulated interpretation of the playback of the conference, and further analyzed difficulties in the interpretation process. The report consists of five chapters.Chapter one introduces the background information, objectives, and features of the selected speeches and the basic information of the interpreter.Chapter two describes the overall interpreting task, including pre-task preparation, interpreting process, and post-task evaluation.Chapter three is the theoretical framework of the report. In this chapter, the author introduces the classification of interpreting errors and reviews the existing researches on problem triggers in interpreting. And the fourth chapter is the key part of this report.Based on Gile’s classification of interpreting errors, the author first classifies specific errors that occurred in the simulation into three categories: omission, misinterpretation, and addition.Through data collection and analysis, the author then finds out that most errors could be attributed to two major problem triggers: high information density and China-specific terms and expressions. For high information density, extensive pre-task preparation and efficient note-taking can reduce the capacity needed in information processing and enable the interpreter to allocate more effort to production;and to better interpret China-specific terms and expressions, the interpreter needs to constantly enrich his/her knowledge base through long term and short term preparation. Also, free translation is highly recommended to flexibly transmit meaning and produce a natural utterance.Chapter five includes the major findings and limitations of this report. The author hopes that the report can provide some inspiring reference for interpreters to tackle high information density and the interpretation of China-specific terms and expressions in consecutive interpreting.
