| Anxiety is regarded as a common emotional influencing factor in interpreting.The anxiety caused by interpreting tasks has been defined as “interpreting anxiety”,which refers to the anxiety phenomenon caused by the immediacy of interpreting,the complexity of source language,the difference between source language and target language structure and psychological factors.The outbreak of COVID-19 has subverted the traditional interpretation mode,and online remote interpretation has become a new trend in interpretation.However,the new trend also brings new challenges to interpreters.In the process of online interpretation,factors such as equipment status,network stability,interpreter’s working environment,and interpreter’s proficiency in equipment operation affect all aspects of interpretation tasks,which also cause interpreter’s anxiety.This study uses Spielberg’s State-Trait Anxiety Scale(STAI)and a self-designed S-E Questionnaire to investigate 50 subjects who have participated in online interpreting tasks.This study has formed a general understanding of the interpreters’ anxiety sources and effects in online interpreting by means of qualitative and quantitative analysis combined.The main inducement of online interpreting anxiety includes: the stability of network and equipment,the connection mode of online interpreting,the time spent to find proper working site,the interpreter’s familiarity with the online working mode and the personality of the interpreter.In addition,according to the analysis of the interviews with six interpreters,anxiety affects many aspects of interpretation performance,and at the same time,it also affects the interpreter’s credibility and the interpreter’s sense of engagement at work.Based on the above findings,this paper attempts to put forward feasible suggestions to deal with anxiety from the perspectives of interpreters and event organizers,hoping to further improve the performance of interpreters in online interpreting tasks. |
