Chapter VI of Winning the Long Game: How Strategic Leaders Shape the Future is selected as the source text of this project, which is a business book written by Steven Krupp, the CEO of Decision Strategies International,Inc.,and Paul J.H.Schoemaker,the executive chairman. This chapter mainly talks about the “discipline of learning” and puts forward two significant ideas,“experiment widely” and “delve deeply” with the analysis of business cases. As a business text, this book combines features of business text, such as speciality, rigorous logic, emphasis on reader’s needs and expectations and definite purpose. The translation project aims to communicate business information and provide commercial instructions and suggestions intentionally provided by the authors,to Chinese readers.Hence, the realization of such commercial purpose should be taken as a prerequisite for the translation task.To achieve the translation goal,Hans Vermeer’s Skopos Theory is applied to overcome difficulties in translation. In Skopos Theory, the translation is seen as the particular variety of translational action with aim and consequence which is based on a source text;the action to be realized is negotiated with the client who commissions the action;and the translation follows such rules as skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory, the translator adopts different translation skills based on various translation circumstances. For example, annotation is adopted to the translation of implicit information of business terms to accurately and completely convey business information and knowledge;conversion and four-character structure are used to translate the subtitles, which ensures that the subtitles of the translation is concise and instructive and attracts target readers’ attention;and amplification, inversion, diversion, combination and rewriting are selected to do the translation of logic and compact structure to make the translation conform to the target language readers’ expression based on the source text. The translation report is divided into four chapters, including task description, translation process, case analysis and conclusion.Chapter One introduces the task background, the objective of the translation task, the significance of the translation task and the structure of the translation report.Chapter Two analyses and describes the source text and its language features, the assistant tools used and difficulties existed in the translation stage, and post-translation management, with the theoretical foundation following.Chapter Three gives analysis on Skopos Theory applied in the translation from the aspect of vocabulary, sentence and paragraph.Chapter Four concludes the major findings and limitations in the translation task.Through this translation practice, the translator makes a conclusion that Skopos Theory plays a role in the translation of business texts, and it is hoped that this translation practice could provide references for other translators in this field...
