| This translation report is based on the translation of four chapters of the third book in the popular Chinese online novel series The Tomb Raiders, namely chapters 3,9,13,and 14.The selected chapters tell the tomb raiders’ experience who travel to the fictional Bottle Mountain in Nuqing County,Hunan Province to raid the tomb for treasure. This thesis is an English translation practice report that presents and summarizes the process of this translation practice. After in-depth analysis, the translator found that the source text contains a large number of cultural-loaded expressions, lots of argots with rhyme in poem-like form in classical Chinese, short and parallel sentences without conjunctions, which imposed difficulties in translation.Basing on the analysis, the translator chose Newmark’s theory of semantic translation and communicative translation to guide the translation practice,in the hope of conveying the characteristics of the original text and at the same time achieve a good communicative effect.Translation techniques such as free translation, amplification, omission, inversion, negation, and others were adopted in the translation. In this report, the translator discussed the guiding role and practical application of the theory in the translation practice from lexical, syntactic and discoursal levels in combination with specific translation cases.Through the translation practice, the translator hopes to provide some valuable references for similar translations and to make his modest contribution to help Chinese excellent online literature reach more foreign readers. |
