Since ancient times,China and Japan have been neighbors, and cultural exchanges have been very frequent.During the Sui and Tang dynasties, with economic prosperity and unprecedented cultural activity, exchanges between the two countries intensified, and the first climax in the history of Sino-Japanese cultural exchanges occurred. In terms of art,the highest artistic level of early Japanese flower and bird painting was pursued by taking the ancient Chinese flower and bird painting art as the standard, and gradually developed in reference and imitation, which is the reason why there are many similarities between Japanese and Chinese paintings. However, due to the difference in regional culture,Japanese flower and bird painting has its own unique aesthetic pursuit and painting characteristics, gradually breaking away from Chinese painting and forming its own unique style, prompting modern painters in China to go to Japan to study.Chen Zhifo,as a pioneer and leader of modern brush painting, was influenced by ancient Chinese painting, and in addition to inheriting the tradition,he blended the essence of Japanese and Western art to write a new chapter of flower and bird painting.Japanese Edo-era flower and bird painter Ito Wakacho was also influenced by ancient Chinese painting, the Japanese school of painting and the West, and is considered by modern people to be an avant-garde painter of the Edo period, and influenced Chen Zhifo to a certain extent. This paper takes Chen Zhifo,a modern Chinese painter, and Ito Wakacho,a Japanese painter of flowers and birds of the Edo period,as the objects of study. The comparison between the two in terms of painting expressions, and the investigation of the causes of homogeneity and heterogeneity between the two, will be a profound inspiration to contemporary flower and bird painters.
