| In this translation practice report, the first six chapters of the book Don’t Overthink It written by Anne Bogel are chosen as the translation material.By introducing the experience of the author, the book analyzes people’s anxiety at present to warn others to spend time and energy on what should be done.Meanwhile, the author also offers some methods to overcome over-thinking.In the source text, impersonal subjects are used in most of the descriptions of the natural environment and the psychology of the characters in the book.Because impersonal subjects are relatively uncommon in Chinese, the impersonal subjects in the source text are difficult to understand and bring many difficulties to the translation.Guided by Newmark’s communicative translation theory, this report conducts a case study of the four categories of the impersonal subjects: abstract noun,“it” or “there”,individual noun and gerund, and discusses the translation strategies of impersonal subjects. The translator adopts methods such as translating impersonal subjects into personal subjects, translating into Chinese adverbial structures, translating into Chinese null-subject sentences, translating into Chinese word “zhe”,or translating into single sentences. This report aims to summarize practical translation methods and provide more reference for Chinese translation of impersonal subjects. There are five chapters in this translation practice report. The first chapter is the task introduction, which briefly introduces the features of the source text, the reasons of choosing the text and the significance of the translation task. The second chapter introduces the process of translation practice. The third chapter is brief introductions of the theoretical framework and impersonal subjects, including the definition of communicative translation theory, the definition and categories of impersonal subjects and the guidance of communicative translation theory in the translation of impersonal subjects. The fourth chapter is a case analysis.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory, the translator puts forward different translation strategies based on the analysis of different types of impersonal subjects. The fifth chapter summarizes the findings and limitations in the process of translation practice. |
