The translation material of this project was from Cold War in the Islamic World, published in 2019 by Indian journalist Dilip Hiro. The purpose of this book is to explore the perennial rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran, the main countries in the Gulf region, and to investigate its roots and analyze its evolution.Through this translation, the translator hopes that the Chinese historical information on the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran can be supplemented, and it can provide relevant reading materials for the target language readers of such texts. The translator selects Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 as the source text.Chapter 4 An Islamic Revolution in Iran;Initial Misleading by the Saudis is mainly about the emergence of Khomeini as the core figure of the Islamic revolution and various battles between the revolutionary party and Shahs.Chapter 5 Iran’s Second Revolution;A Millennial Challenge to the House of Saud presents a series of measures taken by Shahs in response to the revolution.During translation,it is difficult for the translator to convey cultural information, identify meanings of some words and adjust the structure of long sentences. In this case, the translator regards Eugene A.Nida’s theory of Functional Equivalence as the guiding theory when translating.According to the Functional Equivalence theory, the translator should put more emphasis on the equivalence of semantics and style. For the words with different meanings and expressions between the source and target languages, the translator mainly adopts the translation method of lexical conversion and omission, trying to make the translation simple and smooth. For the long and difficult sentences, the translator uses the method of changing order, splitting translation and transitive translation to make the translation logical and fluent. When finishing the whole translation practice, the translator has come to realize more deeply that the practice must be carried out under the guidance of translation theory.Although translation is a process from the original language to the target language,it is definitely not a rigid exchange between the two.Translators must know how to deliver the literariness of the original text and let the reader understand the article.
