| This thesis is an English-Chinese translation project report.The Book of Lost Names is written by Kristin Harmel,a contemporary American female writer.This book consists of thirty-two chapters.The author selects three chapters from Chapter Twelve to Chapter Fourteen as the source text of this translation practice.The main content of this book is that a young woman having a gift of counterfeiting helps hundreds of Jewish children hide their identities and escape from the Nazis in World War II.The purpose of this translation practice is to help the author combine the theoretical knowledge with translation practice,and understand the cultures in different countries.In this translation practice,Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theory is chosen as the guiding principle.Under the guidance of the theory,the author tries to solve the problems in vocabulary,sentence and cultural background.Communicative translation attaches great importance to readers’ feelings,while semantic translation tends to retain the original culture.Therefore,in order not only to retain the original culture,but also to cater to readers’ feelings,the author combines communicative translation theory with semantic translation theory to make the translation more understandable and readable.Through this translation practice,the author has realized that translation requires not only a great deal of knowledge,but also carefulness and patience,especially the serious attitude towards translation.Some words can not be translated for granted and must be verified to ensure the accuracy of the translation.Certainly,the author also needs to maintain long-term cultural accumulation.In addition,through this translation practice,the author has deepened the understanding and application of Peter Newmark’s translation theory,and further improved her translation ability.The author hopes that this thesis can provide some reference for novel translation. |
