The Translation Report Of Doing Research In Applied Linguistics:Realities,Dilemmas,and Solutions

The report is based on the book Doing Research in Applied Linguistics:Realities,dilemmas,and solutions,a collection of academic papers edited by Jim Mc Kinley and Heath Rose.The purpose of this translation practice report is to present problems and solutions encountered in the course of applied linguistics research and to give advice to researchers in related fields.Based on Newmark’s theory of text typology,this report adopts a combination of semantic translation and communicative translation to explore the translation strategies of academic texts at three levels: vocabulary,sentence,and discourse.The flexible use of the two translation methods can better guide the translation process and achieve translation goals.The report has five chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,which mainly introduces the background of topic selection,text introduction,reasons for material selection,and report framework.The second chapter is a brief introduction to translation theory.The third chapter includes text analysis and the translation process.The fourth chapter is a case study,which discusses various problems encountered in translation practice.In the fifth chapter,the translator concludes the findings and problems in the process of translation and puts forward some suggestions for future practice.The report mainly adopts case analysis to summarize the translation characteristics of academic texts: at the vocabulary level,it summarizes the characteristics of professional terms,nominalization,and idioms in the text,conveys the original author’s purpose through literal translation and retains the characteristics of the original vocabulary.At the syntactic level,it summarizes the translation methods of long sentences,passive voices,and special sentence patterns of the text.Through translation methods such as sequential translation and variable order translation,the translation is easy to understand and meets the expectations of readers.At the discourse level,it pays attention to cohesion and coherence,maintains the logical clarity of the translation and the coherence of content through addition,reduction,and reorganization.Through this practice,the translator has gained knowledge about the methods related to the translation of academic texts and has greatly improved translation ability.In writing the report,the translator found many problems in his practice and will continue to improve translation skills in the future.
