This report is based on the author’s English-Chinese translation of The Day She Came Back by Amanda Prowse.The book tells the story between Victoria,her grandmother and her mother.Raised by her grandmother,Victoria didn’t know that her mother was still alive until her grandmother died.In searching for the truth,Victoria chose to forgive her family who had lied to her and was finally reunited with her mother.The novel is very successful in depicting the mother-daughter relationship between the two generations.The translation of this novel will help Chinese readers enhance their understanding of Western culture and deepen their understanding of the differences between Chinese and Western family relationships,which is conducive to promoting understanding and cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.The book centers on family life and thus contains many dialogues between the characters.The author of this report chooses to reproduce the content and style of the original text under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence Theory put forward by Eugene A.Nida.During the translation,the author tries to adopt proper translation strategies and methods to solve problems.That is,when translating difficult words,the author uses free translation or extends the meaning of words in accordance with the context;as for long sentences with complex structure,the author restructures them or adjusts the word order;and when dealing with rhetorical devices,the author tries to retain the style of the original text.Through this translation project,the author has found that a rich background knowledge can greatly help us understand the original text.Besides,the theoretical knowledge is also very important for a translator during the translation practice.Translators should combine the translation theory with translation practice.Finally,a double check of translation is quite necessary to ensure its quality.
