A Study Of The Current Situation Of Senior High School English Teachers’ Information Technology Application Ability

With the deepening of education informatization,the IT application ability has become one of the essential abilities for senior high school English teachers.It is of great importance to improve senior high school English teachers’ IT application ability,so as to promote the realization of information-based education.Domestic scholars’ researches on IT application ability in education and teaching mainly focus on college teachers or pre-service teachers,but there is less research to be concerned with senior high school teachers,especially English teachers.Therefore,it is necessary to investigate English teachers’ IT application ability in senior high school so as to provide some suggestions for the improvement of English teaching quality under the background of information technology era.In this study,the research participants are 104 senior high school teachers in Yantai.This thesis,based on the theory of TPACK,adult education theory and teacher professional development theory,made a survey by using questionnaire and interview to answer the following three questions.(1)What is the current situation of senior high school English teachers’ IT application ability?(2)Are there differences in senior high school English teachers’ IT application ability in the background variables?(3)What are the factors that affect senior high school English teachers’ IT application ability?The findings show that the current situation of English teachers’ IT application ability is not optimistic.The average score of the five dimensions of teachers’ IT application ability is between 3.3-3.7,which is at a middle level.The author analyzes the differences of the background variables,and finds that teachers’ IT application ability are significantly varied among their different ages,teaching years and educational backgrounds.Based on the results of questionnaire and interview,the author has classified the influencing factors into three aspects.(1)Teachers largely are unaware of the importance of IT application in modern education,and they are influenced by traditional teaching ideas and are passive in using IT in teaching.(2)Some teachers’ unsatisfactory IT application ability is caused by unreasonable training time and place arrangement,lack of pertinence in training content,lack of practical operation during training process and single form of training.(3)Schools have failed to pay enough attention to providing good environment for teachers to apply IT and establish appropriate incentive mechanism.Based on the above findings,the following suggestions are proposed in this thesis:(1)From the perspective of teachers,it is necessary to update teachers’ teaching ideas,deepen teachers’ understanding of the important role that IT application play in promoting their English teaching quality,and enhance teachers’ initiative in using IT.(2)From the perspective of training,training institutions should make reasonable arrangement of training time and place with targeted training content,emphasize the practical operation in the training process,and provide diversified forms of training.(3)From the perspective of schools,schools ought to create a good environment for teachers’ IT application with appropriate incentive mechanism.
