This is a report on the E-C translation practice of A Companion to American Indian History(Excerpt).A Companion to American Indian History is a historical work.This book has 25 chapters and was written by many famous Indian scholars.The content of this book covers the religion,family,economy,law,education,gender issues and literature of Indians.This translation practice report selects Chapter 13 of the third part of the "Indian History Guide" : Native American Literature.This chapter mainly describes the traditional Indian literature: oral literature,introduces the Indian writers in different periods and their works,as well as the main content and influence of these works.This translation practice report mainly lists the various difficulties encountered by the translator in the translation process: at the lexical level,the translator needs to convey the meaning of terminologies and proper nouns(such as names and titles)accurately;at the syntactic level,the translation of sentences with inanimate subject and attributive clauses should be complete and coherent;at the textual level,the translator needs to give the exact explanations of the meanings of the elements in the context with the demonstrative pronouns and present the logical relationship between the contents with the conjunctions.In order to realize the accurate transmission of the original text information,this translation practice selected the functional equivalence theory of the famous translation theorist Eugene A.Nida as the theoretical guide.This translation selects the difficulties encountered in translation from three aspects: vocabulary,syntax and text to analyze,in order to accurately reproduce the original information.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,in terms of lexis,for proper nouns such as names and places,the translator mainly uses literal translation and free translation,for difficult terms,the translator mainly uses literal translation and annotation,in terms of syntax,the translator mainly adopts splitting and combination method,and for inanimate subject sentences,the translator mainly employs linear translation and reverse translation,in terms of text,it needs to translate the specific meaning of the pronoun,avoiding the confusion of the content,and the cohesion of the text is enhanced by adding or omitting conjunctions.Finally,the translator summarized this translation practice report and sorted out the experience gained in this translation practice.This translation practice report aims to improve the translation level of the translator,strengthen the ability of combining theory and practice,and is expected to provide some reference for the translation of historical texts and the historical research of Indian ethnic groups.
