The New English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017)points out that,based on the general goal of the course,the specific goal of English teaching for senior high schools is to cultivate students’ key competences of English subject,that is,to cultivate students’ language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.The cultivation of students’ key competences of English subject is inseparable from English teaching.The time of classroom teaching is always limited,and students’ innovative thinking and personality development cannot be fully cultivated and trained.For senior high school students,although the time after class is also limited,the time is discretionary.English homework is not only an effective way to supply and consolidate the content learned in class,but also one of the significant ways to enrich activities of language teaching and to improve students’ ability of using English.For teachers,through reviewing students’ English homework,they could find out the problems in the teaching process in time and then make up for the omissions.However,the current situation of English homework design in senior high school is not ideal.There are some achievements of English teaching in the background of curriculum reform and the proposal of the key competences of English subject,but English homework design is a part which is easy to be ignored.This study is based on the key competences of English subject to investigate the current situation of English homework design in senior high school.Guided by the theory of key competences of English subject and English homework,a questionnaire survey among 200 senior two students in Zhangjiakou No.1 Senior Middle School is conducted,and five English teachers are interviewed,besides,their classroom teaching are observed for three months.According to the results of the survey,the following problems in English homework design of senior high school are explored and summarized.First,the problem of quantity rather than quality in English homework is prominent,and students’ homework pressure is high.Second,the form of English homework is monotonous and boring,so students’ comprehensive language ability cannot be fully cultivated.Third,the effectiveness of English homework is not ideal.The homework assigned by teachers is lack of pertinence,and the weak part of students’ knowledge mastery are not timely supplemented and strengthened,which leads to the value of English homework not being maximized.In view of the problems that have found,the reasons are analyzed and the optimized strategies based on the survey results are given.It aims at improving the effectiveness of English homework.However,there are still some limitations in this study.In order to provide theoretical guidance for the English homework design in senior high school,the reflection on the research has been made.At the same time,it aims at attracting more professional attention on English homework design.
