A Study Of Academic Stance Construction In Discussion Section Of SCI Research Articles

In the background of frequent international academic communication,the importance of expressing academic stance appropriately has becoming obvious.The construction of academic opinions needs not only the objective presentation of research data,but also the appropriate expression of academic stance.Moreover,the discussion section of research articles is the most suitable part for researchers to display the research results and promote the research findings.Stance markers,as the important linguistic devices for researchers to express their academic stance,will affect the construction of their authorial academic stance.The study,based on the stance theory put forward by Hyland,collects 80 pieces of discussion sections from SCI research articles covering four disciplines,taking the corpus analysis software Edit Pad-Pro and BFSU Power Conc as analytical tools with a combination of quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis,to make an account of the distribution of stance markers in discussion section and generalize the linguistic devices marking academic stance with different stance markers to figure out the academic construction in discussion section of SCI research articles.The research findings show that stance markers are frequently used in discussion section of SCI research articles.Hedges,self-mentions,boosters and attitude markers account for 38.25%,26.47%,25.67%,9.61% respectively.The research results also show that may and would are the most frequently used hedges in the discussion section of SCI research articles.Believe,demonstrate and show,as boosters,are used frequently in the discussion section of the SCI research articles.As for self-mentions,SCI journal authors prefer to using the first person plural pronouns,such as we,our and us in discussion section in their research articles and the most frequent self-mention is we in the study.In the discussion section of SCI research articles,SCI research authors construct a kind of certain and reliable academic stance with the help of frequent use of boosters.With the help of hedges,SCI authors can have a consultation with their readers to express their uncertainty about the research.The research findings may offer some references for those who are going to publish articles in SCI research journals to help them express their academic stance with appropriate stance markers in discussion section of research articles.
