An Analysis Of “Magic” Expression Techniques In So Far From God

So Far from God is Ana Castillo’s most representative and best-selling work,which records the experience of Mexican Americans as the “other” in the United States and their resistance.This novel tells a story of Mexican American family through a variety of“magic” expression techniques,in which inherits the traditional magic realism techniques of expression,and carrys out deformation and innovation in hybridity,rhetoric and narratives techniques,etc.From the perspective of magic realism,the present study tries to analyze the “magic”expression techniques in So Far from God in terms of hybridity,rhetorics and narrative techniques,exploring how Castillo strives for the realistic construction of a text by selecting different magic skills.Through this tentative analysis,it is found that: in the aspect of hybridity,Castillo integrates the magic keynote through the hybridization of dreams and reality,mythic archetypes and languages;in terms of rhetorics,Castillo adopts multiple rhetorics of symbol,hyperbole and irony,enhancing the magic color.With regard to the narrative techniques,Castillo makes great eofforts to strengthen the magic effect by the circular plot structure and narrative time.By doing so,it can be seen that Castillo’s use of hybridity,rhetorics and narrative techniques in this novel shows her unique narrative skills of magic realism,helping the construction of reality.In addition,this thesis explores So Far from God from the perspective of “magic” expression techniques,analyzing and summarizing the basis and performance of the deformation of “magic” expression techniques used in the text and its great significance.The study also indicates that the new trend of magic realism-from the conflict between the two cultures to the gradual integration.Through the detailed analysis,the present study intends to a case reference for the systematic study of the “magic” expression techniques in magic realism novels,and giving people new insights into it.
