A Study On Literary Translation From The Perspective Of Translation Variation Theory

Upon entering the new period,the social economy in China has developed rapidly in conjunction with the daily increase of our international status.In order to enhance the overall image of our country and promote the realization of its political and economic goals,we must actively implement the strategy of “Going Global” of Chinese culture and spread Chinese culture to all parts of the world.In recent years,the tendency of international integration is becoming more evident whereas competitions and cooperation among various countries are growing intense.Cultural soft power is an important part of the comprehensive national strength of a country.It also plays an important role in the international competition.Therefore,the cultural exchanges between countries are becoming increasingly frequent.The literature is a part of the culture.Literature ranges from The Book of Poetry,The Songs of Chu,The Poetry in the Han Dynasty,to the poetry of the Tang Dynasty,Song poems,Yuan opera,to modern fiction.The translation of whichever form of literature is the transmission of culture.However,in the propagation process,due to the differences in language and culture among the countries,communication barriers are inevitable.In order to cross the communication barriers between countries,translation is an ideal bridge;therefore,it is of positive significance to study literary translation and improve its quality.At the end of the last century,Professor Huang Zhonglian initially proposed the concept of “translation variation theory”.After several years of its development,the translation variation theory has gradually developed into a localized translation theory that cannot be ignored.In recent years,scholars have increased their studies in translation variation theory and applied this theory to the guidance of translation practice widely.Translation variation is on the premise of retaining the features of the source text to convey the source text to the target-language reader by using appropriate translation techniques,such as amplification,omission,or combination.Translation variation relies on the difficulty of the source text.When translating literary works,translators can choose seven commonly used translation variations to translate the original text,because translation variation can process the source text in a pertinent manner more effectively,which further the target text can effectively convey the ideological content of the source text.By taking the English version of Love in a Fallen City,the thesis provides a case analysis on the translation methods and skills in the English version of Love in a Fallen City.It is summarized in the thesis that: 1.The English version of Love in a Fallen City faithfully conveys the content of the original work,and its method of translation had a value in guiding the dissemination of Chinese culture.2.The translation features of the English version of Love in a Fallen City highlight the viewpoints of translation variation theory effectively.3.The translation variation theory is of great significance in guiding the practice of literary translation.All in all,the thesis believes that the English version of Love in a Fallen City has effectively transmitted the value of Chinese culture,which helps foreign readers to gain an understanding of Chinese literature and culture from literary works as well as facilitates the exchanges in ideology and culture between China and the West.By the translation variation theory,the thesis analyzes the English version of Love in a Fallen City,aiming at providing some references to the future practice of literary translation.
