The Present Situation And Problems Of Digital Carving Technology In Sculpture Creation

The emergence of digital sculpture has broadened the boundaries of sculpture and has also impacted traditional sculpture.The development of digital sculpture cannot be separated from the gradual maturity of digital technology.Nowadays,students and teachers at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute have begun to use digital sculpting technology for wood carving.However,most of the students’ use of digital sculpting technology stays on simple surface techniques.Most of the students also intentionally hide their use of this new sculpting technology that has become increasingly sophisticated.This indicates that the use of digital carving technology in wood carving was a hidden practice at the time.The author believes that this phenomenon is a misunderstanding of the mentality when students face digital sculpting technology.Moreover,They don’t have a well-informed knowledge and thinking about digital sculpture,and therefore are unable to make the best use of this technology.This paper was documented using fieldwork,and the author communicated with authors using the technology to understand the process and opportunities for using digital engraving technology and uses their wood carvings as examples to introduce and discuss the current status of digital carving technology applied to figurative wood carving.For a deeper understanding of the practical application of digital engraving technology,the author also conducted a field trip to the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute’s Huxi Commune Digital Engraving Studio,interviewing and recording and organizing with the director.In order to better illustrate the characteristics of digital carving technology,this paper provides a simplified overview of digital carving technology and compares it with traditional wood carving molding methods.After a thorough understanding of digital sculpting technology,the author instantiated his series of sculptures with digital sculpture and,after repeated experiments,summarized the problems and limitations of digital sculpting technology used in the creation of figurative wood sculptures,leading to a reflection on digital sculpture.With the rapid development of digital technology,the digital sculpture is a topic that can never be avoided.Digital sculpting technology can be just a tool to simply change the way sculpture is made,but it can also cause sculptors to think about new ways of creating sculpture.Sculptors can experiment in their field or actively explore it,but they cannot turn a blind eye to new techniques.The author believes that the latest technology and materials of digital sculpture can be used as new means of traditional sculpture to expand the width of sculpture;the experience of traditional sculpture can also be regarded as the foundation of digital sculpture to strengthen the depth of sculpture,and the two are not contradictory,from which sculptors can freely switch and find their position.In the era of digital sculpture,how to think and how to choose is a question worth considering.The author also firmly believes that art forms will continue to develop and enrich in the diversified digital era,and the boundaries of art will continue to expand.
