This study will focus on the metaphorical nature of animal images in Frida’s paintings, trying to systematically explain the deep meaning and content of animal images in Frida’s paintings. The whole thesis mainly discusses from two aspectsThe thesis mainly discusses from two aspects. On the one hand,by using Freud’s psychoanalysis theory, the author discusses the local culture in Mexico, the author analyzes the metaphorical causes of the animal images in Frida’s paintings. The author finds that the formation of animal images in Frida’s paintings is the result of the conservation of the internal force libido energy and is based on Mexico’s local culture.there is the phenomenon of spirit protection. This phenomenon thinks that everyone is born with an animal connected with his own destiny, which will protect himself. As a result, the animal images in Frida’s paintings are often accompanied by them, which is influenced by the phenomenon of spirit protection. On the other hand, the three-level interpretation method of pannofsky’s iconology is used to analyze the animal images in Frida’s paintings as comprehensively as possible. There are Macaws, monkeys, leopards and other animal images in Frida’s pictures.Through the search of their original knowledge,we find that these animal images have different metaphors, and these metaphors are highly coincident with Frida’s mental state. For example, macaws and monkeys are often regarded as the representatives of obstinacy in the original knowledge, which has a certain degree of inferiority. And Frida’s husband,Rivera, has similar habits with these animals. His daily life is licentious and leisurely, and he has cheated many times in marriage.Frieda uses the images of macaws and monkeys to metaphorize Rivera’s "evil".In Mexican culture, reincarnation is a celebration. For local people, death is not terrible. In Frieda’s paintings, exotic animals such as deer and hummingbirds are metaphors of reincarnation in local culture.Due to the suffering of illness all the year round and the betrayal of Rivera,Frieda has a certain degree of desire for reincarnation. The car accident in Frida’s adolescence deprived her of her reproductive rights, while the dog in the picture silently expresses Frida’s desire to have a child. At the same time, the dog is recorded in the original book as an emissary to help the dead enter the underworld smoothly, which coincides with Frieda’s idea of rebirth.Through the combination of Freud’s psychoanalysis and Pannofsky’s iconology theory, this paper analyzes the metaphorical nature of animal images in Frieda’s paintings,so that this understanding is no longer metaphysical, but more scientific and intuitive.Although psychology and iconology are two different disciplines, they complement each other after a thorough understanding of their essence, which has a strong logical connection to demonstrate the metaphorical nature of animal images in Frieda’s paintings. The coincidence of the animal images in Frida’s paintings and Frida’s mental state shows that the animal images can be used as the carrier of human thought.Since ancient times, people’s awe and fear of animals has gradually changed into peaceful coexistence with animals. This cognitive change shows that the animal image has a matching spirit in all times, and with the passage of time,it has been constantly integrated, reshaped and re recognized. In the contemporary context, more and more artists in order to better present their own mental state and some phenomena in society,by borrowing the image of animals to express themselves.
