Word formation is an important part in high school English vocabulary teaching.The National English Curriculum Standards for general High School(2017 edition)puts forward clear requirements for the learning and teaching of word formation: Teachers should use word formation knowledge to expand students’ vocabulary.English word formation can help us correctly identify the form,part of speech and understand the meaning of words.Practice has proved that word formation can help students quickly expand their vocabulary;it is one of the effective ways to learn English.At present,scholars at home and abroad are paying great attention to word formation.The research and application of word formation at the university have been relatively mature,but there are still deficiencies in the research at the senior high school.This study attempts to conduct a detailed investigation and research on the teaching and learning of word formation in high school English vocabulary,and explore its role in teaching and the main existing problems,in order to provide reference for the teaching of senior high school English.This study takes 40 high school English teachers and 422 high school students of grade two from L Middle School in L County,Guangdong Province as the research object.This study conducts questionnaires and interviews to explore the application of word formation in high school English vocabulary teaching.The research questions are as follows:(1)What is the current situation on word formation in high school English teaching?(2)What are the difficulties in the teaching and learning of word formation?(3)How to improve the teaching method of word formation?After investigation and interviews,this research has the following findings: Firstly,teachers and students generally attach importance to the learning and application of word formation.In classroom teaching,teachers often analyze vocabulary and expand students’ vocabulary according to word formation.Students generally have a strong interest in word formation,and they all hope that more subject teaching of word formation can be carried out.Secondly,there are still major limitations in word formation teaching.For example,some teachers only pay attention to the learning of some common prefixes and suffixes,without in-depth explanation of the principles of word formation.These have not really played the role of word formation.Thirdly,this study has found some good teaching methods of word formation which are recognized by teachers,such as strengthening the learning of roots,and explaining word formation in the form of guessing words in reading.The students also give some suggestions on learning word formation.Finally,the author puts forward corresponding pedagogical implications based on the results of the survey and related theories,and points out the shortcomings of this study.
